This unusual
design, by John Myers, was for the first tour of the Yardbirds
with BOTH Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page swapping guitar licks (Clapton
had already left to join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers). When these
English cats landed, strolled on stage, and plugged in, they blew
away ALL the local musos who just weren't in the same league.
Not even close.
The English
lads from all over that little country a third the size of California
had taken "our" music, run it through Union Jack Warp
Drive, and threw it back at us in capital letters.
As Robert Plant
said to the wildly applauding Hyde Park audience on Led Zepp's
first comeback gig after too many years away, "Thank you!
It's great to be back on stage, to see all your happy faces in
this wonderful place....blahhhh, blahhh, blahhh............
......NOW HERE'S
A BIT OF THIS!!"
And slam, bam,
wallop they took the audience by the throat by launching into
"Whole Lotta Love."
The Yardbirds
knocked me flat.
